Read with Me

Night, Night, Mommy is a favorite board book of ours. It is written in the same rhyming style as God Bless You and Good Night or God Bless My Boo-Boo. (And if you don't have any of that series, you should buy them right away!)

We love the bigger size of the board book, the colorful pictures, the way it goes through the bedtime routine and the rhymes. I love that it even refers to prayer time and thanking God for the day. It's one we read over and over again, and a great book to add to your collection. It's fun to read and entertaining for my children.

Home Cooked, Essential Recipes for a New Way to Cook was not what I was expecting. The beautiful hardback book was filled with enticing pictures and detailed recipes. But the type of recipes were not your typical home-cooked foods. I guess I was expecting traditional comfort foods and classic recipes. She does use cast iron skillets and beautiful mixing bowls. From making your own pasta to making your own sausage, this book was filled with difficult, rustic recipes. It was fun to browse, but these were not regular ingredients that I have in my home. I found it an entertaining read yet not practical. It would appeal to the food-to-table crowd that is interested in rare ingredients. I love a home cooked meal...but I felt intimidated to try these ideas. I did appreciate all the vivid photographs. This author is a wonder-woman in the kitchen.

I couldn't wait to read Better Together: Because You're Not Meant to Mom Alone by Jill Savage. I will be coordinating a MOPS group at my church starting this fall, and I am excited to implement some of the ideas presented in this book. I do think that Satan tries to isolate us, making us feel as if we are alone and hopeless. During this phase of life (motherhood) and in the midst of those long days, it is easy to think that I am the ONLY one facing these obstacles, lack of sleep, temper tantrums over food, etc....but I'm not. What an encouraging, informative book to help bring mothers together during this phase of our lives. We are better together.

I love the friendship building assignments, the index of Bible verses and the practical tips. I may need to pass this book around to my leadership team. It's that good.

In the Field of Grace was such a fun novel to read. The author painted a vivid picture of the story of Ruth and Boaz. Although this was a fictional account of their story, it seemed to bring this true story to light in a way I hadn't thought of it before. The language was beautiful. The descriptions were vivid and the characters were relateable. I loved imagining different aspects of their lives, thinking though the feelings and emotions involved and getting to know the locations.Even though I knew the Bible story well, I found myself so eager to read more.  I will be looking for more books by Tessa Afshar.
