Constantly Speak His Praises

"I will praise the LORD at all times.
      I will constantly speak his praises.
 I will boast only in the LORD;
      let all who are helpless take heart.
 Come, let us tell of the LORD’s greatness;
      let us exalt his name together. "
(Psalm 34:1-3)

Sometimes, God's Word is an encouragement to me. Sometimes, God's Word is a comfort. Tonight, God's Word brought conviction. I've heard it described before that God's Word is a mirror - it reveals who we really are.

While reading in Psalms, my mind kept going back to those three little verses. "I will constantly speak his praises..."  I can think of many things I constantly do, but constantly praising the Lord is not always at the top of my list. Why is is so much easier to complain? Why is it so much easier to gossip? Why is it so much easier to be negative?

When I traveled on the singing team, a team guy gave a devotional challenge on the words we say. He encouraged us to carry a 3 by 5 card around for one day, making a tally mark each time we spoke a critical, negative or complaining word. It really made me think about the words that I was using.

I want to be constantly praising the Lord. I want it to be evident by the words I say that I am a follower of Christ. I want to be known as an encourager. I want to have sweet words.

Corrie ten Boom said, "What have you done today that only a Christian would have done?" It should be evident to others that I am a Christian- my words should reflect this.

Who will join me in watching the words we say? We've got to let our light shine!

  2. I get so aggravated at myself whenever I am negative. Just last night I found myself being negative before a group of Christian friends. "Why am I saying this?" I thought. I once read that most of us talk because we don't know how to be silent.

    1. It's so easy to do...Ardy used to say, "It's better for people to think you're an idiot than for you to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Silence sometimes is golden.

      A very wise father used to tell me, "You can't get in trouble for the things you don't say!"
