Read with Me

We moved houses. We unpacked. We are fixing up and redecorating. I'm glad to have finally had the chance to sit down and read some of these books...

I've always loved and learned from Liz Curtis Higgs' writing. Really Bad Girls of the Bible is a welcome addition to my collection of literature on women of the Bible. What an amazing thing to be reminded of how God was able to use lots of "less than perfect women" in His plan. This book includes the following women's stories: Medium of En Dor, Jael, the Adultress, Athaliah, Bathsheba, Herodias, Tamar the Widow, and the Bleeding Woman. I was familiar with some of these girls while other's I'd never heard of. It was a great read. Encouraging, entertaining and enlightening. This book also includes discussion questions and a study guide.

Raising a Young Modern-Day Princess is a great resource to have on hand as I teach my daughter to love Jesus. Each chapter teaches a different fruit of the spirit with Scripture, creative lists, activities and practical tips. I think it would be an excellent book to go through with a small group of girls too! I will hang on to this book as my daughter grows up and reference it from time to time!

I love adding commentaries to my bookshelves. They are a welcome addition to my quiet time and preparations for talks I give. Christ All Sufficient is an exposition on the book of Colossians. It would be a great resource for the next time I read through the book of Colossians - to have it side by side and consider what another author thought and wrote. Reading other's thoughts on a passage often challenges me to dig deeper for myself.

A Bird, A Girl and a Rescue is a fictional novel for 10-12 year olds. It's set in Africa, full of adventure, mystery, forgiveness and courage. This is the second book in the series by J. A. Myhre. As an adult, I even enjoyed the tale - it would be fun to read to my children when they are a little bit older. The characters were described well and the illustrations sprinkled through out this chapter book were a fun addition. The cover was beautiful and intriguing.

Rest - it's something I know I need, but I am so often to neglect the concept of Sabbath. Rhythms of Rest helps the reader to find moments of "Sabbath" in the midst of the busy culture. I love that there are practical and simple ways to be intentional about rest. There are ideas for getting rid of or ignoring our distractions. And (my favorite) ways to bring friends and family into this concept of Sabbath through meals and other events. This book is relaxing and challenging. I look forward to implementing some of these principles into our lives.

Farewell, Four Waters is a novel based on an aid worker's escape from Afghanistan. It was an entertaining read that had me eager to learn more about the cultures and experiences of those in the middle east. The book is based on the true life events of the author and some other aid workers in 2008.

Parents are often at a loss today for how to train and connect with their teenagers. This book, With All Due Respect, is a 40 day challenge to help parents develop a "more fulfilling relationship" with their teenagers. My kids are only preschool aged, but the principles in this book can begin to be applied now. The concepts are relateable. The book is based on Scripture. There are thoughtful questions and action steps also included.

Seated with Christ drew me in first by its beautiful cover. The concept of the book made me want to keep reading. We live in a culture full of comparisons. What a refreshing take on the war we daily face. She encourages readers to step away from this tiring comparing lifestyle and to take your place (your "seat") and live as Christ meant for you to live. It was a great reminder of my position in Christ and the life He wants for me.
